After Jesus’ resurrection, He shed light on the meaning of Scripture to the two disciples walking to the village of Emmaus (Luke 24:13–35). He enabled them to grasp the significance of the Old Testament and see how He fulfilled its prophecies about the Messiah (for example, passages such as Pss. 16; 22; and Isa. 53). The Holy Spirit continues this work of illumination (John 16:7–11). Interpretation Whereas illumination is the divine side of understanding the Bible, interpretation is the human side.
